My momma said I won’t be pretty enough for a man to take care of me.

She said to work hard and get really smart so I alone could buy what I need.

She said my looks are my cross to bear and that the world will be testing me.

She said she knew I’d be prepared for she too learned to like what they see.

She said she was sorry for conceiving me and bringing me to this world.

Said her regrets for the father she chose but shelter before love was her goal.

Separate but equal, she always would say, is deception within all our lives.

And to always use my mind, for it stays longer than a smile,
